Why visit
Mysore Palace, the seat of the Wadiyar maharajas, is illuminated with 100,000 light bulbs every Sunday and during Dasara, an memorable sight. The 10-day Dasara festival in September to October is the city's biggest event, featuring elephant-led processions and the Mysore Palace illuminations. Chamundi Hill (1,000 m) overlooks the city and holds the goddess temple. The Devaraja Market sells flowers, spices, and incense in piles. Yoga schools in Gokulam draw international practitioners year-round.
When to avoid
Do not visit Mysore expecting every worthwhile stop to be close together or easy to improvise. In Mysore, a good plan starts with the constraints, not with the number of sights. In Mysore, keep the plan compact, check hours before arrival, and use taxis or rideshares when public transport is inconvenient or safety varies by area.
