長浜の古い橋 | The old bridge of Nagahama
Nagahama is a quiet detour for travelers exploring Shikoku's overlooked western coast, the working drawbridge over the Hijikawa is one of the oldest of its kind in Japan and lifts ceremoniously several times a day. The waterfront market sells just-landed sea bream and tachiuo (largehead hairtail). A short drive inland leads to Garyu Sanso, the exquisite teahouse villa just upriver in Ōzu, while Sada Cape offers wild coastal scenery. Best as a half-day stop, not a base.
The rainy season (tsuyu) from mid-June through mid-July dumps heavy precipitation, Nagahama averages around 1,800 mm a year and the Hijikawa has flooded catastrophically in recent decades. Typhoon season (August to October) can shut down trains and ferries with little warning. The town is small and shuts early, don't expect dinner options past 8 pm. Public transport is sparse. A rental car from Ōzu or Matsuyama is the practical way in.
