Why visit
Nairobi is the gateway to Kenya's safaris, but the city itself is a reason to add couple of days. Spend a morning in Nairobi National Park watching rhinos against the skyline, then visit the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust to meet orphaned elephants and the Giraffe center to feed Rothschild's giraffes from a raised platform. The Karen Blixen Museum brings 'Out of Africa' to life. Eat nyama choma (grilled meat) at a bustling local joint, browse the Maasai Market for crafts, and ride the Nairobi Railway Museum's heritage trains.
When to avoid
Nairobi has a real petty-crime and carjacking problem, check current advisories before traveling. Avoid walking after dark, even in upscale Westlands or Karen, and use trusted ride-hailing apps. The Eastleigh and Kibera areas require local guides. Matatu minibuses are cheap but reckless. Long rains (March to May) make traffic legendarily bad and can cut roads to Nairobi National Park. Don't carry obvious valuables. Terrorism risk is elevated near western embassies and shopping malls. Remain alert without being paranoid.
