Why visit
Nantes is a Loire city with old port history, the Machines de l ile, castle, tram access, creative reuse, and enough food and riverfront walking for an easy overnight. It is a good western France base before the coast.
When to avoid
Nantes gets its coldest, wettest stretch from November through January. December averages 5.5°C with about 91mm of rain over 14 rainy days, close to double the 52mm that falls in July or August. Short winter daylight cuts further into time for walking the quays and squares, so April through September works better for an outdoor-heavy stop.
