Why visit
Visit Nara to see how early Japanese state power, Buddhism, and landscape planning still shape a walkable city. Nara Park's deer are semi-wild and closely tied to Kasuga Taisha, where stone and bronze lanterns structure the approach to the shrine. Todai-ji holds the 15-meter bronze Great Buddha, a work whose scale makes the political role of Buddhism legible even for a first-time visitor. Kofuku-ji, Naramachi's merchant houses, and Mount Wakakusa add a useful spread of temple, town, and hillside context. Nara is easy as a day trip from Kyoto or Osaka, but an overnight makes the early and late hours much calmer.
When to avoid
The deer can get aggressive about food, don't tease them with shika senbei (deer biscuits) without quickly handing them over, and never feed them anything else. Cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons (late March to April, late November) bring overwhelming crowds. Most major sites close by 5 pm. Summer humidity is brutal. The shika are wild animals, small children should be supervised. Don't expect Kyoto-level dining or nightlife. Nara mostly shuts down by 9 pm, so plan dinners early.
