Why visit

Nesebar's old peninsula is one of the most atmospheric historic centers on the Black Sea. Walk between the dozen surviving medieval Byzantine churches, St Stephen's frescoes, the geometrical brickwork of Christ Pantocrator, and the ruined St Sophia ('Old Bishopric') are highlights. The Archaeological Museum displays Greek and Thracian finds. Eat fresh Black Sea fish and Bulgarian salads at peninsula tavernas. Use Nesebar as a base for the long sandy beaches at Sunny Beach (Slanchev Bryag) just across the bay, and ferry trips to Pomorie's salt lakes.

When to avoid

Sunny Beach next door is one of Europe's most notorious party-resort strips, cheap booze, aggressive promoters, pickpocket risk, and rowdy stag groups. Stay in Nesebar Old Town, not Sunny Beach, for atmosphere. Peninsula streets are stone-cobbled and very narrow, leave the suitcase wheels behind. July to August packs the peninsula shoulder-to-shoulder with Russian and Eastern European tourists. Restaurants right on the seafront often inflate prices for tourists, menu prices are sometimes negotiable. Cars cannot enter the old town, use the entrance car park.

About Nesebar

Nesebar is an ancient city and one of the major seaside resorts on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast, located in Burgas Province. It is the administrative centre of the homonymous Nesebar Municipality. Often referred to as the "Pearl of the Black Sea", Nesebar is a rich city-museum defined by more than three millennia of ever-changing history. The small city exists in two parts separated by a narrow human-made isthmus with the ancient part of the settlement on the peninsula, and the more modern section on the mainland side. The older part bears evidence of occupation by a variety of different civilisations over the course of its existence.
