Why visit
Nettuno offers Romans a salt-air escape from the city's summer heat. Walk the medieval Borgo Medievale lanes around the Sangallo fortress, then descend to the long sandy beach. The Sicily-Rome American Cemetery is moving and beautifully maintained, with 7,861 white marble graves of US soldiers killed in the 1944 Anzio landings. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Graces holds a much-revered medieval Madonna statue. Eat fresh-caught Tyrrhenian fish at portside trattorias. Day trips to Anzio's Roman ruins and Mussolini's wartime headquarters are within walking distance.
When to avoid
Summer weekends (June to August) bring overwhelming Roman beach crowds. Trains from Termini fill to standing-room. Italy's Ferragosto (mid-August) packs the seaside and shutters most local restaurants for the week. The local economy is depressed compared to Rome, some neighborhoods feel tired. Don't expect Florence-level art or service. Avoid the lungomare road for driving in summer. Walk or use the train. The American Cemetery is a place of remembrance, dress respectfully and keep voices low.
