Why visit
Neuwied is more a quiet Rhine stopover than a destination. The Schloss Neuwied (Neuwied Palace), the count's residence built in the 18th century, has formal gardens and houses occasional concerts. The Rhine promenade is pleasant for evening strolls watching cargo barges glide past. Across the river, Andernach has the world's tallest cold-water geyser. The romantic Rhine Gorge UNESCO area starts just upriver. Roman fort ruins at Niederbieber recall the area's frontier history. Day trips to Koblenz's Deutsches Eck, where the Rhine and Mosel meet, take 15 minutes by train.
When to avoid
Don't expect tourist-trail polish, Neuwied is a workaday Rhine town with limited English-speaking infrastructure. Floods on the Rhine occasionally close the riverside road in winter. Sundays are very quiet, most shops close. The Pellenz industrial zone north of town is unattractive. Avoid driving in the historic center. Use the train station's parking. Karneval week (Fasching, late February) packs hotels in nearby Koblenz and Cologne. Some bars in outer suburbs can feel rough. Stick to the central Marktplatz area at night.
