Why visit
New Delhi packs Mughal, colonial, and modern Indian heritage into one sprawling city. Walk down Rajpath from India Gate war memorial to Rashtrapati Bhavan, especially during the Republic Day parade. Visit the UNESCO-listed Humayun's Tomb (a precursor to the Taj Mahal), Qutub Minar, and Red Fort across the river in Old Delhi. Eat parathas in Chandni Chowk's narrow alleys, then air-conditioned modern Indian fine dining at Indian Accent. Khan Market offers boutiques and cafes. The Lotus Temple, Akshardham, and Lodi Gardens are all essential.
When to avoid
Air pollution in winter (October to February) is really hazardous, AQI often exceeds 400 with smoke from crop burning. Bring N95 masks. Summer heat (April to June) regularly tops 45°C and can be deadly. Monsoon flooding paralyzes traffic. Don't accept rides from random touts at the airport, use prepaid taxis or the metro.
