Why visit
Nicosia is one of Europe's most layered capitals, walk through three centuries in a single morning. Cross the pedestrian Ledra Street checkpoint between the Greek-Cypriot south and Turkish-Cypriot north for one of the world's most surreal urban experiences. The Cyprus Museum holds extraordinary ancient sculpture and the world's largest collection of Cypriot antiquities. Walk the Venetian walls, visit the Büyük Han Ottoman caravanserai (now an arts hub), and the Selimiye Mosque, a converted 13th-century Gothic cathedral. Eat sheftalia, halloumi, and mezze in old-town tavernas on both sides.
When to avoid
Crossing checkpoints, Ledra Street, Ayios Dometios, and others, requires a passport (rather than only an ID card) for non-EU visitors and sometimes for EU citizens too. Check current rules. Don't take photos of Green Line buffer zone soldiers or military zones. Summer (July to August) is very hot, highs above 38°C with little shade in the old town. Some northern museums and shops close on Sundays and Muslim holidays. Renting a car in the south and driving into the north used to be problematic for insurance, verify before crossing. Buy euros in the south and Turkish lira in the north (or use cards).
