Why visit
Nikšić is the gateway to Montenegro's wild interior. The 19th-century Cathedral of St. Vasilije Ostroški dominates the skyline. The King Nikola Castle nearby houses a regional museum. But the real draw is what's outside town, the breathtaking Ostrog Monastery built into a vertical cliff, the Tara River canyon (Europe's deepest), Lake Krupac for swimming, and Duška 0KeŽenja peak for views. The Nikšićko brewery offers tours and pours of fresh lager. Use it as a base for rafting on the Tara, hiking in Durmitor National Park, and exploring monasteries lost in the karst.
When to avoid
Nikšić's industrial outskirts are unattractive, stick to the central streets around Slobode Square. Public transport is limited. Rent a car for surrounding monasteries and parks. Roads to Ostrog Monastery are narrow, twisting, and clog up in summer with pilgrim buses. Ostrog itself can be packed. Arrive at dawn for atmosphere. Winter brings real snow at this altitude, mountain roads to Durmitor sometimes close. English is patchy. Serbian/Montenegrin phrases help. Include the brewery tour but pace your sampling, Nikšićko is stronger than it tastes.
