Why visit
Ningbo offers a polished, modern Chinese city with deep history. The Tianyi Pavilion (Tianyi Ge) is one of Asia's oldest private libraries, founded in 1561, with peaceful gardens. The Old Bund, 30 years older than Shanghai's, has restored European-style consulate buildings. Putuo Shan, a sacred Buddhist island and one of China's Four Sacred Mountains, is a 90-minute ferry away. Eat Ningbo's famed sticky rice balls (tangyuan), drunken crab, and freshwater eel. Use Ningbo as a base for the canal-and-water-village appeal of Shaoxing or coastal Zhoushan.
When to avoid
Summer typhoons (August to September) regularly hit Ningbo, check forecasts before traveling. Air quality can dip badly in winter when northerly winds carry industrial haze. National holidays (Chinese New Year, May Day, Golden Week in October) bring colossal crowds. China requires visas for most visitors and Western credit cards barely work, set up WeChat Pay or Alipay before arrival. English signage exists but conversational English is rare outside top hotels. Have addresses written in Chinese characters for taxis. Don't drink tap water. Use bottled.
