Why visit
Nizhny Novgorod has the most striking Kremlin in Russia outside Moscow, a 13-tower red-brick fortress crowning a hill above the Volga, with sweeping river views and a Soviet-era 'Eternal Flame' memorial. Walk Bolshaya Pokrovskaya pedestrian street to the unique Stroganov Church with its lavish 17th-century stone carving. Take the cable car across the Volga to Bor for a riverside perspective. The Sakharov Museum honors the dissident physicist exiled here in Soviet times. The merchant Rukavishnikov Mansion and Pechersky Monastery round out a layered city of merchant, Soviet, and modern Russia.
When to avoid
Russia carries broad travel restrictions and sanctions, check current advisories carefully and confirm whether your insurance covers travel there. Western credit cards are largely useless. Bring cash and budget for currency hassles. Photography of military and government buildings is forbidden. Winter is really severe with sub-zero temperatures and ice. Some Soviet-era housing districts on the city's outskirts feel rough. Stick to the central Sormovsky and Nizhegorodsky areas. The local rail and metro are excellent but signs are entirely Cyrillic.
