Why visit
Novorossiysk is a working Russian port with industrial pulse and surprising beach culture. Walk the seafront promenade past the Mikhail Kutuzov cruiser, a decommissioned Soviet warship turned floating museum. The Malaya Zemlya war memorial complex is sobering and architecturally striking. Beaches at Sukhumi (city) and the cleaner shores around the resort suburb of Abrau-Dyurso, famous for Russia's oldest sparkling-wine estate, fill in summer. The Markotkh Range hiking trails offer dramatic Caucasus-to-sea views. Use it as a base for the Krasnodar wine country and the Crimean ferry routes.
When to avoid
Russia carries serious travel restrictions due to the war in Ukraine, check current advisories and confirm whether your insurance covers it. Novorossiysk is a strategic port and military target. Ukrainian drone strikes have hit the area. Western payment cards don't work. Bring cash. Photography of the port, military installations, and naval vessels is strictly forbidden. The notorious bora wind off the Caucasus can knock cargo ships into the bay and reach hurricane force in winter. Some industrial outskirts feel rough. Stick to central Novorossiysk and Abrau-Dyurso.
