Why visit
Come for the pre-Romanesque monuments, the Gothic cathedral and Cámara Santa, lively sidrerías on Calle Gascona, and one of northern Spain's most walkable old towns. Oviedo is a strong base for Asturian food, fabada, cachopo, Cabrales cheese, and poured natural cider, plus day trips to Gijón, the coast, and mountain villages. The city feels calmer than coastal Asturias but still deeply social at night.
When to avoid
Do not visit Oviedo expecting every worthwhile stop to be close together or easy to improvise. A route through Oviedo works best when opening days, transport, weather, and distance are treated as cultural logistics, not afterthoughts. Keep Oviedo practical: fewer cross-town moves, confirmed hours, and paid transport when it saves time or saves time. If the main interest is one nearby site, it may be better to treat Oviedo as a base rather than the whole destination.
