Why visit
Palembang appeals to travelers drawn to maritime history and street food, the Srivijaya-era ruins at Bukit Siguntang, the Al-Quran Al-Akbar (the world's largest carved wooden Quran), the floating mosque, and the river itself, best seen from a getek boat at sunset. May to September is the drier window. The city is a launching point for Bangka Island beaches and Sumatran rainforest treks.
When to avoid
Do not visit Palembang expecting every worthwhile stop to be close together or easy to improvise. For Palembang, the practical constraints are part of the itinerary: hours, transport, weather, crowds, and the distance between worthwhile areas. Keep Palembang practical: fewer cross-town moves, confirmed hours, and paid transport when it saves time or saves time.
