Why visit
Palos rewards travelers interested in the Age of Discovery, the Casa-Museo de Martín Alonso Pinzón, the Iglesia de San Jorge where Columbus's crew received Communion before sailing, and the Muelle de las Carabelas (Wharf of the Caravels) with full-scale replicas of all three ships. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to October) are best. Combine with the Doñana National Park wetlands a short drive away, and the wider Atlantic coast (Costa de la Luz).
When to avoid
Mid-summer (July to August) is very hot, often topping 35°C, and shade is limited along the riverside walks. The October 12 (Columbus Day) anniversary draws crowds. Public transport is sparse. Rent a car for the wider Huelva region. A route through Palos de la Frontera needs enough margin for hours and delays to change. For Palos de la Frontera, closures and movement deserve attention, whether the place is small and quiet or large and slow to cross.
