Why visit
Parintins is essentially a destination for one event, the Festival de Parintins, held the last weekend of June at the Bumbódromo arena. Outside that window, the town is a quiet Amazonian river port. In late June it becomes the second-biggest festival in Brazil. Book accommodation a year ahead. Many visitors stay on chartered river boats moored in the channel. The Amazon itself, with pink river dolphins, jungle excursions, and the meeting of waters near Manaus, is the broader draw.
When to avoid
Outside the festival, Parintins has very limited tourist infrastructure. Mosquito-borne illness (dengue, malaria, chikungunya, yellow fever) is a real risk, vaccinate, use DEET, and consider antimalarials for jungle trips. Tap water is not potable. The river itself can be dangerous, piranha and stingrays in some channels, strong currents elsewhere. Avoid the city in late May or after the festival, when prices spike and exhaustion shows.
