Why visit

Patras rewards travelers seeking less-touristed Greece, the medieval Castle of Patras above the city, the Roman Odeon, the imposing 19th-century Saint Andrew Cathedral (one of the largest churches in the Balkans), and the upper city (Ano Poli) of stepped lanes and neoclassical homes. May, June, and September are the best months. The Patras Carnival (January to Lent, peaking the weekend before Lent) is Greece's biggest, with parades, masked balls, and the Treasure Hunt. Use Patras as a base for the Achaia wine country.

When to avoid

Mid-summer (July to August) bakes, highs over 35°C and locals decamp to nearby beaches. The port area can get sketchy at night. Stay in the historic center. Carnival weekend brings 200,000+ visitors and tripled accommodation prices, book months ahead or skip it. Beware of pickpockets at the ferry terminal and on city buses.
