Why visit
Peterborough rewards travelers interested in English ecclesiastical history, the cathedral is breathtaking and far less touristed than Durham or Canterbury, with one of the great Romanesque painted nave ceilings (12th-century, recently restored). Walk the cathedral precincts and the medieval Becket Chapel. The Nene Valley Steam Railway and Burghley House (Elizabethan masterpiece nearby) are easy day trips. Spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October) are best. Use Peterborough as a base for the Cambridgeshire Fens and easy 50-minute trains to London or Cambridge.
