Why visit
Pompei is a focused Campania base for the ruins, Vesuvius routes, Naples access, and movement toward the Amalfi coast. It works when the archaeology deserves more than a rushed stop between trains.
When to avoid
Mid-summer crowds and heat are punishing, highs over 35°C, no shade, hard volcanic stone walking surfaces. Many areas of the site are open only with separate (often timed) tickets. Aggressive 'guides' outside the entrance may approach, hire only authorized ones inside. Don't underestimate water needs. Bring 2 liters per person. Pickpockets work the queues. Tour buses crowd the Porta Marina entrance. The Piazza Anfiteatro entrance is quieter.
