Why visit
Porto Alegre is the gateway to gaúcho cowboy country, the rolling pampas, churrascarias serving spit-roasted picanha, and the German-Italian wine valleys of Bento Gonçalves and Gramado a few hours north. In the city itself, watch the famous lakefront sunset from Por do Sol pier, browse the Mercado Público's stalls, tour the riverside Usina do Gasômetro power station turned cultural center, and catch a Grêmio or Internacional football match, the local rivalry is among Brazil's fiercest. The city's parks, especially Parque da Redenção on Sundays, are excellent.
When to avoid
Crime rates are high, robberies and muggings are common in the city center after dark. Avoid the Quarto Distrito and stretches near the bus station at night. The catastrophic 2024 floods inundated about 90% of the historic core. Some areas are still recovering. January and February are uncomfortably hot and sticky. Don't flash phones or jewelry on the street. Use ride-hail apps (Uber, 99) instead of hailing taxis at random.
