Portofino is a comune located in the Metropolitan City of Genoa on the Italian Riviera. The town is clustered around its small harbour, and is known for the colourfully painted buildings that line the shore. Since the late 19th century, Portofino has attracted tourism of the European aristocracy and it is now a resort for the world's jet set.

Portofino is pure visual indulgence; the harbor at golden hour, framed by olive groves and umbrella pines, is one of Europe's most photographed scenes. Hike the coastal path to San Fruttuoso Abbey (a 12th-century Benedictine monastery reachable only by boat or footpath), kayak around the rocky headland to Paraggi's turquoise cove, or boat out to see the underwater Christ of the Abyss bronze statue. The Castello Brown above the village offers panoramic views, and the lighthouse at Punta del Capo makes a beautiful sunset walk.
Portofino is eye-wateringly expensive; a basic spritz can run €25, parking is heavily restricted, and there's even a 'no-sitting' fine in some piazza zones during peak hours to keep crowds moving. July and August see day-tripper crowds that overwhelm the village's narrow streets; arrive before 10 AM or after 5 PM, or stay overnight. The single road in jams up badly. Dress codes at restaurants and beach clubs lean upscale.
Summers are warm, sunny, and reliably dry; typical of the Mediterranean Cfa climate; with daytime highs of 26 to 28°C, sea temperatures of 23 to 26°C, and nights cooling pleasantly to 18 to 20°C. The Ligurian breeze keeps the harbor comfortable. June and September offer the same beautiful weather with a fraction of the crowds of July to August. The coastal hiking paths are exceptional in late spring and early fall. Pack light cotton, a swimsuit, sun hat, and proper hiking shoes for the Sentiero del Pellegrino paths.
December through February are the cooler or wetter period in Portofino. For Portofino, cooler months can suit concerts, museums, and slower walks better than exposed summer routes. In Portofino, rain, wind, cold, snow, daylight, and service reductions can matter more than the average high. Portofino can still be rewarding in this period if interiors and compact walks carry the day. In Portofino, keep outdoor plans shorter, check hours carefully, and use a taxi or rideshare when weather or late returns make transit less attractive.
