Why visit
Portofino is pure visual indulgence. The harbor at golden hour, framed by olive groves and umbrella pines, is one of Europe's most photographed scenes. Hike the coastal path to San Fruttuoso Abbey (a 12th-century Benedictine monastery reachable only by boat or footpath), kayak around the rocky headland to Paraggi's turquoise cove, or boat out to see the underwater Christ of the Abyss bronze statue. The Castello Brown above the village offers panoramic views, and the lighthouse at Punta del Capo makes a beautiful sunset walk.
When to avoid
Portofino is eye-wateringly expensive. A basic spritz can run €25, parking is heavily restricted, and there's even a 'no-sitting' fine in some piazza zones during peak hours to keep crowds moving. July and August see day-tripper crowds that overwhelm the village's narrow streets. Arrive before 10 AM or after 5 PM, or stay overnight. The single road in jams up badly. Dress codes at restaurants and beach clubs lean upscale.
