Póvoa de Varzim offers a refreshingly local Portuguese beach experience minus the Algarve crowds. The 12-kilometer beachfront is wide, sandy, and connected by a pedestrian boardwalk. Surfers love the consistent Atlantic swell. Visit the Casino da Póvoa (one of the largest in the Iberian Peninsula), the colorful Bairro Sul fishing quarter, and the Ethnographic and History Museum that documents the unique Poveiros maritime culture. Pair with neighboring Vila do Conde for the Convent of Santa Clara and the Saturday handicrafts fair. Easy 25-minute metro into Porto.

When to avoid

The Atlantic here is cold (16 to 18°C even in summer) and the surf can be punishing, watch for rip currents, especially the famous 'travessia' tidal pull. The casino district at night attracts a rowdier scene. August sees the city packed with Portuguese vacationers and prices spike. Skip the seafront restaurants on the main avenue, they're overpriced. Walk a few blocks inland to Rua da Junqueira for better fish at half the price. Don't expect English fluency outside hotels.

About Póvoa de Varzim

Póvoa de Varzim is a Portuguese city in Northern Portugal and sub-region of Greater Porto, 30 km (18.6 mi) from its city centre. It sits in a sandy coastal plain, a cuspate foreland, halfway between the Minho and Douro rivers. In 2001, there were 63,470 inhabitants, with 42,396 living in the city proper. The city expanded southwards, to Vila do Conde, and there are about 100,000 inhabitants in the urban area alone. It is the seventh-largest urban agglomeration in Portugal and the third largest in Northern Portugal.
