Why visit

Pozzuoli is one of Italy's most underrated archaeological treasures, the Flavian Amphitheater is wonderfully preserved with intact underground hypogeum (the gladiator passages) you can walk through. The Macellum's three columns famously bear ancient mollusk borings showing centuries of submersion and re-emergence, the original geological evidence for sea-level change. Visit the bubbling Solfatara crater (when open), tour Baia's submerged Roman villas by glass-bottom boat, and ferry to Procida and Ischia from the Pozzuoli port. Sophia Loren grew up here, the local seafood is superb.

When to avoid

Pozzuoli sits inside an active super-volcano caldera. Earthquake swarms intensified through 2024 to 2026, check Italian Civil Protection updates before travel. The Solfatara fumarole field has been closed to public access since fatal accidents in 2017. Some neighborhoods feel rough and pickpocketing on Cumana commuter trains is common, keep valuables hidden. August sees Italian holiday closures of restaurants and museums.
