Why visit
Přerov is mostly an industrial railway town and not a typical tourist destination, but it has a few worthwhile stops. The Renaissance château (Zámek Přerov) houses the Komenský Museum and a botanical garden. The Helfštýn Castle 17 km south is one of the largest castle ruins in central Europe and hosts the Hefaiston blacksmith festival every August. The town is a sensible base for the Moravian Karst caves and Olomouc's UNESCO Trinity Column an hour west. Use Přerov primarily as a rail hub or quick stop, not a destination.
When to avoid
Přerov has no central historic core to speak of and the train station area is grim. Skip the city as a leisure destination unless you have specific Komenský interests. Industrial pollution from the chemical and railway sectors keeps air quality mediocre. Some older quarters have social challenges and feel rough at night. Don't expect English fluency outside the railway station and the museum. Winter brings damp grey skies for weeks.
