Ниски се Прилепскиве Маркови Кули | High are Prilep's Marko's Towers (folk song)
Prilep is one of the Balkans' great undiscovered destinations. Climb the Markovi Kuli at sunset, the granite formations look otherworldly, and the ruined fortress and chapel walls offer panoramic views of the Pelagonia plain. Visit the Treskavec Monastery (a 13th-century Byzantine monastery improbably perched on a 1,400-meter rock outcropping above the city) by hike or 4x4. The Old Bazaar (Stara Čarašija) preserves Ottoman-era goldsmiths and cafes. Bitola's classical ruins at Heraclea Lyncestis are an hour south, and Lake Prespa is two hours west.
Prilep has very limited tourist infrastructure, few English speakers, modest hotel options, no major airport (Skopje is 130 km north, Ohrid 100 km southwest). Winter months (December to February) see freezing fog blanket the plain and many sites become inaccessible. The Treskavec hike is steep and unmarked, hire a local guide or go by 4x4. Skip the city during the July Beer Festival if you want any peace. Book months ahead if you don't.
