Why visit
Pristina is one of Europe's most affordable and least touristed capitals. Photograph the well known NEWBORN monument and the Heroinat memorial honoring Kosovo's wartime women. Tour the spectacularly weird National Library by Croatian architect Andrija Mutnjaković. Wander the Ottoman-era old quarter to the Imperial Mosque (1461) and the Ethnographic Museum's preserved kulla mansions. Day-trip to the medieval Gračanica Monastery (UNESCO), Prizren's gorgeous old town, or hike in the Sharr Mountains and Rugova Gorge. The macchiato culture is famous, some claim Pristina has the highest cafe density per capita in Europe.
When to avoid
Tensions with Serbia occasionally flare, the northern Mitrovica area and ethnic Serb enclaves can be unpredictable. Check current news. Air pollution in winter is severe due to the Obilić coal-fired power station. Expect smog and hazy days. Sundays see most shops shuttered. Don't try to enter Kosovo with a Serbian entry stamp first, you'll have border problems. Skip the eastern town of Mitrovica without prior research. It's split between Albanian south and Serbian north along the Ibar River.
