Why visit
Prizren is widely considered the most beautiful city in Kosovo. Climb to the Kalaja fortress at sunset for panoramic views over the red-tiled rooftops and the Lumbëardhi River. Cross the Ottoman stone bridge to wander the cobbled bazaar. And visit the magnificent Sinan Pasha and Bajrakli mosques. The annual Dokufest international documentary film festival (early August) transforms riverside cinemas, fortress walls, and rooftops into screening venues, it's one of southeast Europe's best film events. Hike up into the Sharr Mountains to alpine lakes and shepherd villages, or visit the medieval Holy Archangels Monastery just outside town.
When to avoid
Don't try to enter Kosovo with a Serbian entry stamp first, you'll have problems crossing back. Tensions in the broader Kosovo-Serbia issue occasionally spike. Check news. The Holy Archangels Monastery requires KFOR (NATO) escort access at certain times, confirm before showing up. Winter brings cold smog from household coal heating. Skip the city during Dokufest if you haven't booked accommodation, the city fills completely. Public transport between cities is limited. Rent a car or use taxis.
