Why visit
Rabat is the calm, dignified counterpart to Marrakech and Fes, a working royal capital where the medina is for residents not tourists, where you can walk freely without aggressive touts. Wander the cobalt-and-white painted Kasbah of the Udayas perched above the river mouth. Visit the unfinished Hassan Tower minaret and the dazzling Mausoleum of Mohammed V. Explore the romantic Roman/Almohad necropolis of Chellah with its storks and crumbling tombs. The Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art is North Africa's best modern museum. Pair Rabat with Salé and Meknès for a quieter Moroccan circuit.
When to avoid
Rabat shuts down dramatically during Ramadan daytime hours, most cafes and restaurants close until iftar. The medina is calmer than Marrakech but pickpockets still work the souks. Don't photograph the royal palace or military installations, the security is real. Friday afternoons and weekends see the kasbah and Chellah at their most crowded with locals. Skip Rabat if you want desert dunes or High Atlas trekking, it's an Atlantic capital, not a Sahara base.
