Why visit
Ranchi rewards travelers interested in tribal culture and the dramatic Chota Nagpur Plateau landscape. Visit the Tribal Research Institute Museum to understand the Munda, Oraon, Ho, and Santhal peoples whose traditions long predate Hindu and Mughal empires. Tour the Birsa Munda Museum honoring the 19th-century tribal freedom fighter. Day-trip to nearby waterfalls, Hundru, Dassam, Jonha, and Sita, that are at peak monsoon flow. The Rock Garden and Tagore Hill offer panoramic views. Use Ranchi as a base for trekking the Netarhat hill station or visiting the dense Saranda forest, India's largest sal forest.
When to avoid
Ranchi has serious traffic congestion and air pollution from coal mining nearby. Power cuts are frequent. The city is the operational base for Maoist (Naxalite) insurgent activity in surrounding rural districts, do not travel into rural Jharkhand without verified local guidance and current security checks. Crime against women has been a persistent concern. Female travelers should take normal urban precautions. Skip the city in May (peak heat) and August (peak monsoon flooding). English signage is limited outside the airport.
