Why visit
Regina rewards travelers interested in Canadian Indigenous, prairie, and law-enforcement history. The RCMP Heritage center offers tours of the Mounties' training depot, you can watch the daily Sergeant Major's Parade. The Royal Saskatchewan Museum has major First Nations and dinosaur exhibits (Saskatchewan is fossil-rich). Wander beautiful Wascana center, one of North America's largest urban parks, around a man-made lake. Visit the Mackenzie Art Gallery, the Government House (the old territorial capitol), and the moving Trial of Louis Riel re-enactments commemorating the 1885 trial of the Métis leader executed in Regina. Day-trip to Grasslands National Park.
When to avoid
Regina has bitterly cold winters that can reach −40°C with windchill, do not visit December to February without serious arctic clothing. Mosquitoes in summer are legendary. The downtown is quiet on evenings and weekends. Crystal meth and opioid issues affect some inner-city neighborhoods. Stay alert downtown after dark. Roughrider game days fill the city with green-clad revelers, entertaining but accommodation books out. Don't expect mountain or coastal scenery, the prairie is famously, defiantly flat.
