Why visit
Rehovot is essentially a science city, the campus of the Weizmann Institute is the obvious draw attraction. Its beautiful gardens. The Clore Garden of Science (an outdoor interactive science park. Especially good for kids). The Levinson Visitors Center, and the Weizmann House (Chaim Weizmann's modernist home designed by Erich Mendelsohn, now a museum). Visit the Ayalon Institute, a hidden underground bullet factory operated 1945 to 48 beneath a kibbutz laundry to produce ammunition for the Israeli War of Independence. Otherwise Rehovot offers a relaxed mid-sized Israeli city with good Yemenite food and easy access to Tel Aviv.
When to avoid
Rehovot is suburban-feeling, don't expect tourist energy, monuments, or beach access. Like all of central Israel, the security situation can shift. Rocket sirens during major escalations have reached Rehovot. Check Israel's Home Front Command alerts. Shabbat closures (Friday evening to Saturday evening) shut shops and pause public transit. The Weizmann campus requires advance booking for some tours and ID for entry. Don't expect a Mediterranean beach scene, you're 10 km inland and need to drive to Rishon LeZion or Palmachim beaches.
