Why visit
Resistencia is essential viewing for art lovers, the open-air sculpture museum is one of South America's most ambitious public-art experiments. Walk the Paseíto de la Plaza 25 de Mayo and the wider center to see hundreds of marble, bronze, and steel works. The Fogon de los Arrieros cultural center, founded in 1943, anchors the city's bohemian artistic scene. Visit the Museo del Hombre Chaqueño for Toba and Wichí Indigenous artifacts. Cross the Gen Belgrano Bridge to neighboring Corrientes for a more colonial atmosphere. Use Resistencia as a base for the Iberá Wetlands ecosystem (caimans, capybaras, marsh deer) about 250 km southeast.
When to avoid
Summer (December to February) brings brutal Chaco heat, frequently 38 to 42°C with stifling humidity. Mosquitoes and biting insects in the wet season carry dengue, chikungunya, and yellow fever, confirm vaccinations. The city has petty crime issues. Don't display valuables and use Uber or Cabify rather than walking after dark. Skip the Negro River for swimming, it's polluted and contains dangerous wildlife. Don't expect English fluency. The Iberá wetlands flood unpredictably, confirm road access before driving.
