Why visit
Reykjanesbær is the perfect first or last stop in Iceland. Visit the Viking World Museum to see a full-size replica of the Íslendingur Viking ship that sailed to America in 2000. Explore the Icelandic Museum of Rock 'n' Roll for an unexpectedly excellent take on Iceland's surprisingly fertile music scene (Björk, Sigur Rós, Of Monsters and Men). The Bridge Between Continents lets you straddle two tectonic plates. The famous Blue Lagoon geothermal spa is just 13 km east. Take a guided tour to the Reykjanes geothermal area's bubbling mud pots and to the recent eruption sites (subject to safety closures).
When to avoid
Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula is in the middle of an active volcanic and seismic phase, ongoing eruptions since 2023 have repeatedly closed the Blue Lagoon and evacuated the nearby town of Grindavík. Check Icelandic Met Office (Veðurstofa Íslands) and Civil Protection updates daily before any peninsula activity. Wind is famously brutal, hold doors firmly when getting out of cars or they'll snap off. Iceland is breathtakingly expensive, budget accordingly. Don't underestimate the weather changes: clear sky to whiteout in 30 minutes happens.
