Why visit
Rijeka is the gateway to Croatia's Kvarner Gulf islands and the Učka mountain massif. Climb the 561 stairs to Trsat Castle and the pilgrimage church of Our Lady of Trsat for wide views over the city and bay. Walk the Korzo, see the Rijeka City Museum's D'Annunzio-era material, and stop at PEEK&POKE for 1980s Yugoslav home computing. Rijeka also works as a base for ferries to Krk, Cres, Lošinj, and Rab, hiking in Učka Nature Park, and longer trips toward Plitvice Lakes.
When to avoid
Rijeka is a working port. Industrial neighborhoods near the harbor are gritty and feel rough at night. The bora wind in winter can hit 200 km/h and ground ferries. Check forecasts. Sundays see most shops shuttered. The summer cruise-ship influx clogs the Korzo with tour groups. Do not expect Dubrovnik-style polish. Rijeka's appeal is layered, working-class, and unconventional. Skip the city if you want quintessential Mediterranean charm. Head to nearby Opatija for Belle Epoque luxury instead. The Krk airport is small. Most travelers arrive via Zagreb.
