Rijeka is the principal seaport and the third-largest city in Croatia. It is located in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County on Kvarner Bay, an inlet of the Adriatic Sea and in 2021 had a population of 107,964 inhabitants. Historically, because of its strategic position and its excellent deep-water port, the city was fiercely contested, especially between the Holy Roman Empire, the Republic of Venice, the Kingdom of Italy and Yugoslavia, changing rulers and demographics many times over centuries.

Rijeka is the gateway to Croatia's Kvarner Gulf islands and the spectacular Učka mountain massif. Climb the 561 stairs to Trsat Castle and the pilgrimage church of Our Lady of Trsat for striking panoramic views; wander the Korzo (the main pedestrian boulevard) lined with Habsburg buildings; explore the Rijeka City Museum's quirky D'Annunzio-era artifacts. The bizarrely beautiful Computer Museum (PEEK&POKE) celebrates 1980s Yugoslav home computing. Use Rijeka as a base for ferry trips to the islands of Krk, Cres, Lošinj, and Rab; for hiking in Učka Nature Park; and for the Plitvice Lakes National Park 130 km east. The Rijeka Carnival in February is one of Europe's biggest.
Rijeka is a working port; industrial neighborhoods near the harbor are gritty and feel rough at night. The bora wind in winter can hit 200 km/h and ground ferries; check forecasts. Sundays see most shops shuttered. The summer cruise-ship influx clogs the Korzo with tour groups. Don't expect Dubrovnik-style postcard beauty; Rijeka's appeal is layered, working-class, and unconventional. Skip the city if you want quintessential Mediterranean charm; head to nearby Opatija (12 km west) for Belle Epoque luxury instead. The Krk airport is small; most travelers arrive via Zagreb (160 km).
Summers are warm, humid, and pleasantly Mediterranean; daytime highs of 25 to 27°C, sea temperatures 22 to 24°C, evenings cooling to 17 to 19°C. The northeasterly bura (bora) wind occasionally sweeps in even in summer, dropping humidity dramatically and creating crystal-clear skies. The Rijeka Summer Nights festival fills June to July with concerts, theatre, and ballet in outdoor venues. The Karst seafront paths to Opatija are glorious. Pack light cotton, sun hat, sunscreen, swimsuit, and water shoes for the rocky/concrete swimming platforms (sand beaches are rare).
December through February are the cooler or wetter period in Rijeka. Winter in Rijeka is often a useful cultural season if the itinerary is built around interiors and shorter outdoor sections. For Rijeka, ask how much the season limits walking, transport, and day trips, not just what the thermometer says. Rijeka can still be rewarding in this period if interiors and compact walks carry the day. Outdoor time in Rijeka should stay flexible; check hours and spend on a ride when weather, darkness, or distance would otherwise dominate the plan.
