Why visit
Rosario is one of Argentina's most pleasant and underrated cities, walkable, intellectual, and far less hectic than Buenos Aires. Visit the towering National Flag Memorial complex. Tour the apartment building where Che Guevara was born. Explore the MACRO contemporary art museum housed in colorful repurposed grain silos. The riverside parks (Parque España, Parque Independencia) are excellent. Catch a Newell's Old Boys or Rosario Central football match, these are Messi's beloved Newell's clubs and the rivalry is intense. Take a launch out to the Paraná Delta islands. The food scene (especially Italian-influenced pastas, parrilla steakhouses, and craft beer) is excellent.
When to avoid
Rosario has a serious crime problem, the city has been ground zero for Argentina's drug-cartel violence in recent years, with high homicide rates linked to the Rosario-based Monos gang. Stay in tourist-frequented areas (Pichincha, Bulevar Orño, the riverside), use Uber rather than walking after dark, and don't display valuables. Petty crime is common at the bus station. Skip the southern barrios without local guidance. The summer humidity is oppressive and mosquitoes are aggressive (dengue circulates). Don't drive yourself, traffic is chaotic.
