Why visit
Rosh HaAyin is more residential than touristy but offers a few distinctive experiences. Visit the Yarkon National Park (where the Yarkon River begins) for hiking, wading in the spring pools, and exploring the impressive ruins of Antipatris/Tel Afek, a Roman city on the spring's banks with Crusader and Ottoman fortifications. The historic Yemenite Jewish synagogues and bakeries (jachnun, malawach, kubaneh) of the older central neighborhoods are excellent. Use Rosh HaAyin as a quiet base for visiting Tel Aviv and the Samarian biblical sites. The Israel Center for Bird Migration in nearby Latrun is a favorite for birders.
When to avoid
Rosh HaAyin is suburban and limited in nightlife. Like all of central Israel, the security situation can shift. The city's eastern edge actually borders the West Bank Green Line, and rocket sirens can sometimes activate. Check Israeli Home Front Command alerts. Shabbat (Friday evening to Saturday evening) shuts most shops. Don't enter the West Bank from here without research and permits. Skip the city if you don't have specific Yemenite Jewish heritage interests, head to Tel Aviv for nightlife, Jerusalem for monuments.
