Why visit
Ruse is one of Bulgaria's most architecturally beautiful cities, often skipped by tourists who head straight to Sofia or the coast. Wander the central pedestrianized Aleksandrovska Street and Svoboda Square. Visit the Pantheon of National Revival Heroes, the Battenberg Palace housing the Regional History Museum, and the elegant Profitable Building (Dohodno Zdanie) housing the opera and theater. The Sexaginta Prista Roman fortress ruins date to the 1st century. Day trip to the spectacular Ivanovo Rock-Hewn Churches (UNESCO) 20 km south, Cherven medieval fortress, or Rusenski Lom Nature Park's karst gorges. The Romanian border crossing is straightforward.
When to avoid
The Danube riverside has industrial zones. Some areas feel grim. Ruse-Giurgiu border crossing can have long delays for cars and trucks. The smell from the Soviet-era chemical plants downwind in Giurgiu sometimes drifts across (a major historical complaint of Ruse residents). Skip the city in deep winter when the Danube fog is oppressive. Don't expect English fluency. Download offline Cyrillic translation.
