Travel to Russia is currently extremely difficult for most readers, see the avoid section. For those few permitted, Ryazan offers an outstanding day trip from Moscow: the Ryazan Kremlin's white-stone walls and onion-domed cathedrals. The Sergei Yesenin Museum-Reserve at the poet's birthplace village of Konstantinovo on the Oka river bluffs (one of Russian literature's most evocative landscapes). The Pavlov Museum honoring physiologist Ivan Pavlov who was born here. The Ryazan State Aircraft Engineering Festival in August (when held) is a major event for Russian airborne forces (VDV) culture.
Russia's invasion of Ukraine has resulted in extensive Western sanctions, suspended commercial flights from most Western countries, and severe travel advisories. The U.S. State Department, UK FCDO, and Canadian government rate Russia at 'Do Not Travel' with serious risk of arbitrary detention of foreign nationals, and the U.S. Has urged its citizens to leave immediately. Ryazan also hosts a Russian airborne (VDV) base directly involved in the war, photography of military installations is illegal and has resulted in arrests. Western payment cards (Visa, Mastercard) do not work in Russia. Do not travel without urgent business and government clearance.
