Why visit
The Old City is the draw, narrow stone lanes, historic synagogues like the Ari Ashkenazi and Abuhav, and the famous Artists' Quarter with its galleries and studios. The Klezmer Festival each summer fills the streets with traditional Jewish music. Mountain air and views over the Galilee mean cool evenings even in summer. Day trips reach Mount Meron, the Sea of Galilee, and Druze villages. Safed pairs well with a slow weekend rather than a rushed stop.
When to avoid
Shabbat (Friday sundown to Saturday sundown) shutters nearly everything, plan accommodation, food, and transport accordingly. Winters are cold and occasionally snowy at this altitude, with poorly heated old buildings. The city sits near the Lebanese border, check current travel advisories, as regional security situations change quickly. Modest dress is expected in the religious old city.
