Why visit
Saint-Denis itself is the gateway and the place to sample Réunion's extraordinary fusion cuisine, carry rougail saucisses, samoussas, cari poulet, and rhum arrangé from market stalls and Creole bistros. Wander Rue de Paris for restored Creole mansions and the Leön Dierx art museum. The real Réunion is the interior, the cirques of Mafate, Salazie, and Cilaos, and the active Piton de la Fournaise volcano, but Saint-Denis anchors trips with the airport, hotels, and post-hike feasts.
When to avoid
Cyclone season runs roughly January to March, storms can pin you down for days and ground flights. Don't underestimate the southern-hemisphere UV. Réunion sits in the tropics. Petty crime in some Saint-Denis neighborhoods at night warrants normal urban precautions. Avoid hiking the cirques without proper gear and water, weather flips quickly at altitude even when the coast is sunny.
