Why visit
The corniche d'Or coastal road through the Esterel, hugging cliffs, calanques, and hidden beaches, is one of France's most visual drives. The old port and Promenade René Coty buzz with summer terraces, and Plage du Veillat is the central swimming beach. The Musée Archéologique displays Roman amphorae recovered offshore. Saint-Raphaël makes an excellent base for day trips to Cannes, the Îles de Lérins, and Saint-Tropez, reachable by ferry, avoiding summer road traffic.
When to avoid
July and August bring crushing crowds, traffic gridlock on the Corniche d'Or, and prices that double or triple. Don't try to drive into the center on summer weekends. The Esterel cliffs become hazardous after summer rains, stick to marked trails. Off-season many restaurants and beach clubs simply close. Avoid being on Provence roads during French school holiday changeovers, traffic can stretch hours.
