جبال خضراء في لجزيرة | Green mountains in the peninsula
Salalah's banana, papaya, and coconut plantations look impossible against the Arabian backdrop. The Frankincense Trail UNESCO sites, Al-Baleed Archaeological Park, the Land of Frankincense Museum, and the desert ruins of Sumhuram, trace 4,000 years of trade. Empty white-sand beaches stretch for miles east at Mughsail, where blowholes spray sea spray. The Wadi Darbat seasonal lakes and Tawi Atair sinkhole are striking. During khareef season the Jebel Samhan plateau turns into mist-soaked meadows.
Outside the khareef months (mid-June to mid-September), surrounding hills revert to dry desert, don't expect green if you arrive in November. Conservative dress is expected: cover shoulders and knees in town and at religious sites. Alcohol is restricted to licensed hotels. Border areas with Yemen are unsafe, check government travel advisories before any inland excursion south or west. Friday morning is the prayer hush. Many businesses open later.
