Why visit
The Casa Museo Hermanas Mirabal is the singular reason to come, the family home preserved as the sisters left it, with personal effects, period furnishings, and the moving story told by family-trained guides. The town itself is quietly authentic Cibao Valley life: tobacco fields, coffee farms, and the surrounding lush green hills. November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, marked on the anniversary of the sisters' murder, brings memorial events. When to avoid
Tourist infrastructure is minimal, don't expect resort-style amenities or English-speaking staff outside the museum. The road from Santiago can be congested with truck traffic. Avoid hurricane season peak (August to October) when storms can flood low-lying areas. Standard Caribbean precautions apply: bottled water, mosquito protection, modest dress in town. Most international visitors come on day trips rather than overnighting.
