Why visit
The Registan, three monumental madrasas around a single plaza, glittering with majolica calligraphy, is one of the great architectural ensembles on Earth, especially at sunset or under the evening light show. Add the soaring Bibi-Khanym Mosque, the necropolis of Shah-i-Zinda with its mosaic walkways, the Gur-e-Amir tomb of Timur, and the ruins of Ulugh Beg's 15th-century observatory. The Siyab Bazaar bursts with non bread, dried apricots, and Uzbek plov. Day-trip to Shahrisabz, Timur's birthplace. Samarkand rewards two to three nights minimum.
When to avoid
Summer heat (June to August) climbs above 35°C with intense sun and almost no shade in the open monument plazas. Winter can dip well below freezing with bitter wind. Many monuments charge separate camera fees. Conservative dress is appreciated at religious sites, cover shoulders and knees. Tap water is not safe. Stick to bottled. Solo female travelers report mostly easy experiences but unwanted attention happens. Avoid changing money on the street, use bank ATMs.
