Why visit
The historic core is a stroll-worthy ensemble of pastel colonial mansions, the imposing Cathedral of La Laguna, the Iglesia de la Concepción with its Mudejar bell tower, and 17th-century convent buildings. The Universidad de La Laguna keeps the bars and tapas terraces busy. The local guarapo (palm syrup), papas arrugadas with mojo, and Canarian goat cheese are essential. Use La Laguna as a calmer base for Tenerife, cooler than the south coast, with quick tram access to Santa Cruz and easy reach of the Anaga rural park's laurel forests.
When to avoid
La Laguna's microclimate runs noticeably cooler and cloudier than the south coast resorts, don't expect beach weather. The trade-wind cloud (panza de burro, 'donkey's belly') often parks low overhead even when Playa de las Américas bakes. Many shops close mid-afternoon for siesta. Saturday late-night student crowds can be rowdy near the university. Calima dust storms from the Sahara occasionally turn skies orange. Respiratory conditions worsen.
