Why visit
The pilgrimage complex is the entire reason, the original 16th-century Santa Maria delle Grazie convent where Padre Pio lived and his preserved cell, the small church beside it, and Renzo Piano's vast modern Pilgrimage Church (consecrated 2004) that holds 6,500 worshippers. Padre Pio's tomb is on permanent veneration in the crypt. The Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza hospital he founded still operates. Beyond the pilgrimage, the surrounding Gargano National Park offers ancient beech forests, the Tremiti Islands, and dramatic clifftop towns like Vieste.
When to avoid
Without a connection to Catholic devotion or interest in modern pilgrimage architecture, San Giovanni Rotondo holds limited appeal, it's a religious destination first and tourist destination distant second. Hotels are functional rather than compact, geared to bus-tour pilgrims. September 23 (Padre Pio's feast day) sees enormous crowds and full bookings. Conservative dress is expected at all religious sites, cover shoulders and knees. Avoid driving in town during major pilgrimages. Use the dedicated parking and shuttles.
