Why visit
The 18th-century Basílica de Nuestra Señora de San Juan de los Lagos is the heart, baroque facade, gilded altar, and the venerated 16th-century corn-paste image of the Virgin behind glass. The Plaza Principal is animated year-round but explodes during the major pilgrimages: February 2 (Candelaria) and August 15 (Assumption). Local artesanía includes embroidered cloths, religious art, and the famous 'pan de San Juan' bread. Use as a base for the surrounding Los Altos tequila country and pilgrimage circuit to nearby San Juanito de Escobedo.
When to avoid
During major pilgrimages (February and August) the city becomes overwhelmed, hotels fill, prices spike, traffic is gridlocked, and finding food without long waits is challenging. Conservative dress is expected at the basilica and respected on streets. The high elevation can affect newcomers. Hydrate. Avoid driving Jalisco's rural highways at night, cartel presence in the wider region is real, though the city itself is usually calm. The shrine is really sacred space, photography restrictions apply at the altar.
