Why visit
The crescent bay itself is the famous view: sand beach, bobbing fishing boats, and the towering Cristo de la Misericordia statue on the northern headland at sunset. The real draws are the surfing and yoga at outlying beaches such as Playa Maderas, Playa Hermosa, and Playa Remanso, all reached by 15 to 30 minute shuttles. Backpacker nightlife centers on Sunday Funday. La Flor Wildlife Refuge sees olive ridley turtle arribadas from July to January. Use San Juan del Sur as a multi-day chill base or a starting point for Ometepe Island.
When to avoid
Nicaragua has experienced political tension and protests since 2018. Check current government travel advisories before booking. Riptides at Maderas and Hermosa have killed unprepared swimmers, surf with locals or take a lesson. Don't underestimate the Pacific. Town water isn't reliable for drinking. Petty theft is real. Watch belongings on beaches and at hostels. Sunday Funday can get rowdy. Avoid the height of rainy season (October) when roads to outlying beaches turn to mud and dengue/Zika risk peaks.
